Knoxville College was created in 1875 to provide a quality education to African Americans after the Civil War.

Thick, beautiful hair was important to Sarah. She did not like the way her short, patchy hair made her look or feel. She prayed to God it would not fall out anymore. One night Sarah had a dream about special ingredients, oils and creams, which could be made from plants. She believed the ingredients in her dream would improve her hair. The next morning, Sarah began to search out ingredients such as tetter salve and sulfur petrolatum to make hair-care products for black women. She began testing them on herself.
